What does this job involve?
- Create, program, and modify manufacturing programs for computer-numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools and manufacturing systems
- Import and adapt computer-aided design (CAD) drawings into computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software
- Determine machining parameters and select the appropriate cutting tools
- Set up, commission, and operate machine tools and manufacturing equipment for the machining of materials

Where do they work? Machining technicians primarily work on milling or turning machines, most of which are CNC-controlled.

Above all, attention to detail and precision are essential in this profession, for example, when reading manufacturing drawings. It is also important to be willing to learn new things and adapt to new machines and their capabilities. Knowledge of mathematics is just as important as manual dexterity and spatial awareness.
