What does this job involve?
- Manufacture and erect structures such as buildings, industrial buildings, gantries, and tanks
- Program and operate computer-numerically controlled (CNC) machines and machine tools
- Inspect welds using non-destructive and destructive testing methods (e.g., visual inspection, tensile, bending, and compression tests, ultrasonic and radiographic testing) and correct welding defects

Where do they work? Metal fabricators primarily work in metal shops, fabricating steel structures from sheet metal and structural steel.

Above all, attention to detail is essential in this profession, for example when reading manufacturing drawings. A willingness to learn various welding techniques and to work on automated machines is just as important as manual dexterity and spatial awareness.
