What does this job involve?

Metalworking technicians ensure that machines and production equipment are ready for operation. They manufacture equipment parts, machine components, and assemblies, which are then assembled into machines and technical systems. These systems are subsequently set up, commissioned, and tested to verify their functionality. Their responsibilities also include the maintenance and repair of the equipment. The causes of malfunctions are identified, and the necessary replacement parts are ordered or manufactured in-house, and repairs are carried out. Once assembly and testing are complete, colleagues or customers are trained in the operation and handling of the equipment.

What matters most?

Above all, attention to detail and technical skill are essential in this profession, for example when interpreting technical documentation, maintaining and repairing machinery, and conducting quality control checks. A solid understanding of mathematics is required, as it involves tasks such as converting values from tables or calculating lengths, angles, and volumes for the production of replacement parts. Knowledge of physics is essential for operating various machines and manufacturing equipment and for understanding the fundamentals of electrical and control engineering. Computer science skills make it easier to get started working with computer-controlled machines.

What high school diploma is required?

There is no legal requirement for formal education—a high school diploma would be an advantage.
