Our previous 3-axis milling machine had become increasingly maintenance-intensive over the years. As a result, the decision was made in 2021 to purchase a new machine. After visiting several trade fairs and meeting with machine manufacturers, the idea of acquiring a 5-axis machine with automation gradually took shape. Grob-Werke in Mindelheim provided the right concept with their G150 milling machine and the PSS-R 300 pallet rotary storage system. In spring 2022, the negotiations were successfully concluded.
The search then began for a suitable clamping concept and tool holders. After a detailed analysis of our parts and the machine’s interference radius, Triag International provided an excellent solution with its Sputnik multiple clamping system. For the tooling, we chose a shrink-fit device and tool holders from Haimer GmbH. This technology has also been used very successfully for some time by our colleagues at Urban Metall in Forchach, Tyrol.
After our machine operators successfully completed user training at Grob in Mindelheim, the long-awaited machine with pallet storage was finally delivered and successfully commissioned at the end of the year. At the beginning of 2023, the CAD/CAM system and the postprocessor were then set up. Following a final introduction by a Grob application engineer, we started with great enthusiasm to set up and begin production on our new milling machine.
